Andaiye
The Network of NGOs of Trinidad and Tobago and The Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago raises its voice, to join those in Guyana, the Caribbean and globally in expressing our condolences on the passing of Andaiye to her immediate and extended family and her sisters and brothers in the struggle for equality, justice and development.
Andaiye made her transition on Friday 31st May, at the age of 77. She will be remembered through her actions and commitment to transformation of Caribbean society from its inherited inequalities to a more just and humane one.
She was an executive member of the Working People’s Alliance, working closely with Dr. Walter Rodney and Brother Eusi Kwayna. She was a writer, educator, women’s activist and political figure.
Andaiye co-founded Red Thread, a rights activist based organisation in Guyana and continued her activism until her hospitalisation in mid-May. She was a 30-year cancer survivor. Andaiye was a longstanding friend of the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago. We worked with her on many campaigns, most recently in the fight for the rights of persons of African/Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic, against the atrocity of mass deportation and rendering tens of thousands stateless, both of which are crimes against humanity.
Andaiye is an outstanding example of the generation that did not sleep to dream but dreamed to change the world! Her spirit lives on!
